Life often throws us unexpected challenges. For me, that challenge was cancer treatment. In April 2023, I chose to embrace resilience by taking a trip to Estes Park, Colorado, right in the middle of my chemotherapy. This journey was more than just a getaway; it was proof of the human spirit's strength and the beauty of nature.
Arrival in Estes Park
As soon as I stepped off the plane, excitement took over. The crisp mountain air filled my lungs, and I felt ready to explore the stunning landscapes ahead. We stayed at Rams Horn Village, a cozy retreat in the heart of the Rockies. The welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff made it the ideal setting for our adventures.

Once settled, we headed straight to Bear Lake. The view was simply breathtaking, with snow-capped peaks reflecting in the tranquil water. I discovered snow spikes and trail poles—essential gear for our upcoming hike—and made sure to buy them on the spot.
Preparing for the Hike
The next day, we set out for a 3-mile trek up Deer Mountain. I felt both excited and anxious. Just days before, I had completed a round of chemotherapy, and the thought of hiking at high altitude was intimidating. Yet, I was determined to push through.
As we began our climb, the trail mixed rocky paths with patches of snow. I felt the weight of my journey, physically and emotionally. The beauty around me helped divert my attention from the fatigue creeping in.

The Challenge of Snow
As we hiked higher, the snow deepened, making the trek more difficult. At one point, we waded through snow that reached my hips. I could hear my heartbeat—not just from exertion, but from excitement about being in such a stunning location.
Eventually, we had to turn around about 500 feet from the summit. My mom, hiking with me, took a little tumble into the snow. Thankfully, a kind stranger helped her up, and we shared a laugh about our unexpected adventure. Although I didn’t make it to the top, the experience significantly tested my resilience.
Embracing Adventure
The following day, we decided to switch things up. We visited the Mustang Coaster, a thrilling ride that wound through the breathtaking landscapes of Estes Park. The rush of adrenaline felt invigorating, reminding me that joy can still be found amid challenges.

After the coaster, we rented a jeep to explore Rocky Mountain National Park. Driving through winding roads, surrounded by towering trees and stunning vistas, felt liberating. Each turn revealed a new view that took my breath away.
The Beauty of Nature
As we drove through the park, I was blown away by the beauty around me. The wildflowers burst with vibrant colors, beautifully contrasting with the deep greens of the pine trees. I felt a deep sense of peace wash over me, reminding me of the healing power of nature.
We stopped at various lookout points, each offering a unique view of the majestic mountains. I took a moment to reflect on my journey, both in life and in cancer treatment. Nature has a way of grounding us, and I felt grateful for this profound experience.

Finding Strength in Community
Throughout the trip, I was reminded of the importance of community. Whether it was the kind stranger who helped my mom or the friendly locals we met, their support made the experience even richer.
Cancer can often feel isolating, but moments like these reminded me that I am not alone. The connections we form, even in brief encounters, can provide immense strength and encouragement when we need it most.
I do also have to thank my mom and dad, who had this trip planned, and with my health it seamed in question, but we all made it happen, and it will be a cherished memory for us all!
Reflecting on Resilience
As our trip wrapped up, I took a moment to reflect on my experiences. This journey was about more than hiking or exploring; it was about resilience. It was about overcoming challenges, embracing new adventures, and finding joy in the small moments.
I returned home with a renewed sense of purpose. The mountains had taught me that while life may throw obstacles our way, we have the power to rise above them.

A Journey Worth Remembering
My April 2023 trip to Estes Park beautifully highlighted the resilience we all have. Even amid cancer treatment, I found joy, adventure, and a deeper connection to nature.
If you’re facing your own challenges, I encourage you to seek out adventures, big or small. Whether it's a hike in the mountains or a stroll in the park, nature has a remarkable way of healing and inspiring us. Embrace each journey, and remember that resilience is about thriving in the face of adversity.
Let your spirit soar, and may you find strength in the beauty surrounding you.
