Conquering New Trails: My Journey from Cancer Survivor to Biking the Outlet Trail

I have always wanted to hike the entire Outlet Trail in Penn Yan. After a Base 2 Summit trip in June, I realized I wanted to challenge myself further by biking the full 7 miles there and back, making it a 14-mile ride. Since I hadn’t ridden a bike in eight years, I decided to get my dad’s bike in shape and set out on this journey. The ride from Penn Yan to Dresden was much easier than I expected. As a cancer survivor, reaching the end of the trail and feeling strong was a powerful moment for me.

Preparing for the Ride

Getting back on a bike after eight years was intimidating. I started by tuning up my dad’s bike, checking the brakes, tires, and gears to ensure everything was safe. I found the front tire tube was no good, so I went to Martin's Bike Shop in Dundee to get it replaced. Can't thank them enough for their help.

The Outlet Trail Experience

The Outlet Trail stretches between Penn Yan and Dresden, winding through scenic landscapes and peaceful natural areas. It’s a popular spot for hikers, bikers, and nature lovers. The trail’s surface is mostly gravel and dirt, which requires a bike with sturdy tires and good suspension.

Starting in Penn Yan, the trail passes through open fields, wooded sections, and alongside creeks. The fresh air and quiet surroundings made the ride enjoyable and refreshing. I stopped a few times to take in the views and catch my breath, especially since I was still building my endurance.

The ride to Dresden felt easier than I expected. The trail’s gentle slopes and well-maintained path helped me maintain a steady pace. I was surprised by how much my body remembered about biking, even after so many years. The sense of freedom and accomplishment kept me going.

Overcoming Challenges

Biking 14 miles after a long break was not without challenges. My legs felt sore the next day, and I had to be careful not to push too hard. I also faced moments of doubt, wondering if I could finish the ride. But I reminded myself of my journey as a cancer survivor and how far I had come.

Staying hydrated and fueling my body with healthy snacks made a big difference. I carried water and energy bars to keep my energy levels up. Wearing comfortable clothing and a helmet also helped me stay safe and focused.

What This Journey Means to Me

Completing the Outlet Trail ride was more than just a physical achievement. It symbolized resilience, healing, and the power of setting goals. As a cancer survivor, I have faced many obstacles, but this ride showed me that I can still push my limits and enjoy life fully.

This experience has inspired me to keep exploring new trails and challenges. It also reminded me of the importance of patience and self-care. Progress may be slow at times, but every step forward counts.

Tips for Anyone Wanting to Try the Outlet Trail

This ride has opened new doors for me. I plan to explore more trails and maybe even join local biking groups. The Outlet Trail is just the beginning of a new chapter filled with adventure and growth.

If you’re thinking about trying the Outlet Trail or any new physical challenge, remember that every journey starts with a single step. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and keep moving forward.
