Watkins Glen State Park is a true treasure located in New York's Finger Lakes region. With its breathtaking gorges, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant green landscapes, it calls out to nature lovers and adventure seekers. I had the joy of visiting this stunning park in the middle of my cancer treatment in September of 2023 with my family—my mom, dad, cousin Alex, and his girlfriend Jesse. Our day was packed with laughter, exploration, and moments I will never forget.
Setting Off on Our Adventure
Our day began with an air of excitement as we piled into the car, ready for a thrilling adventure. The drive to Watkins Glen was filled with chatter, laughter, and shared memories from past family trips. This anticipation for a day immersed in nature was palpable among us.
Upon arriving at the park, the first thing that struck us was the majestic landscape—towering cliffs and lush greenery created an unforgettable backdrop. We grabbed some water, eager to dive into our adventure.

Exploring the Trails
Watkins Glen State Park features over 19 stunning waterfalls along its trails, and we were determined to see as many as we could. The main trail, measuring about 2 miles, meanders through the gorge and offers breathtaking views at every turn. The air was filled with the sound of rushing water and the invigorating scent of pine trees.
A highlight of our hike was the iconic Rainbow Falls. Standing at its base, we stood in awe as sunlight danced on the water's surfacfall
e, creating a stunning rainbow effect. It became the perfect spot for a family photo, and we took turns capturing the moment.
The trail offered its share of challenges, with steep steps and rocky paths that demanded agility. Alex and Jesse led the way, enthusiastically keeping up a fast pace. My mom, with her determined spirit, tackled the steps with grace, while my dad brought humor to the hike with his playful jokes.
Capturing the Beauty
After our refreshing break we resumed our hike, often stopping to take photos of the stunning scenery. From unique rock formations to vivid foliage, we wanted to capture every moment.
At one point, we stumbled upon a quiet area where water pooled into a serene pond. The reflection of the trees in the water was breathtaking. We took turns posing for photos, cherishing these special moments that made our trip memorable.

The Final Stretch
As the sun began to set, we made our way toward the trail's final stretch. The golden glow enveloped the landscape, and while fatigue began to set in, the excitement of reaching the end pushed us forward.
The last waterfall we encountered, Cavern Cascade, was a spectacular sight. Water cascaded over the rocks in a mesmerizing display. We stood in silence for a moment, taking in nature's beauty and feeling grateful for our time spent together.
Reflecting on Our Day
As we headed back to the car, I reflected on the day. It was more than just a visit to a beautiful park; it was a reminder of the importance of family and the joy of shared experiences. Each laugh, each highlight, and each gorgeous view came together to create an unforgettable experience.
The drive home was filled with conversation about our favorite moments: the breathtaking waterfalls, the laughter during our picnic, and the thrill of exploring together. It was clear that this trip to Watkins Glen State Park would be etched in our hearts for years to come.

A Lasting Recommendation
Visiting Watkins Glen State Park with my family was an experience I will treasure forever. The stunning landscapes, laughter, and shared moments crafted a tapestry of memories that I hold dear. If you find yourself in the Finger Lakes region, make it a priority to explore this remarkable park.
