A Weekend of Adventure and Connection at CedarKirk!

Spending a weekend away from the usual routine can bring unexpected joy and meaningful connections. From March 6 to 8, 2026, a group of friends gathered at CedarKirk, a charming summer camp-style retreat just outside Tampa. The weekend was filled with laughter, challenges, and heartfelt moments that left a lasting impression on everyone involved.
Arrival and First Encounters
The journey began on March 6 when Dexter and his mom kindly picked me up in West Palm Beach. We drove across the state and arrived at CedarKirk around 7 p.m.
When we got there, the First Descents crew was already settling in. It was great to see our buddy Meg again and meet many new faces. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, setting the tone for the days ahead.
That evening, we played a game called Incoherent that Riley Brought, which quickly became a favorite. As more people arrived, the group continued to grow, and the energy in the air was contagious. After a late night of hanging out, Dexter and I headed to the men’s cabin.
At that point, it was just the two of us — a quiet moment before the weekend's activities really kicked into full gear.

The Next Morning and First Activities
Morning came quickly, especially with very little sleep. I woke up early and joined others for breakfast, which turned out to be a great chance to talk and learn more about everyone.
The first scheduled activity was the high ropes course, a challenge that tested both balance and courage. Dexter decided to pass on the ropes, and I thought about the phrase “challenge by choice,” which is often used by First Descents.
Feeling tired and knowing my balance was a bit off that morning, I chose to take a hike around the park instead.
The hike was refreshing, though when I reached the pool to cool off after , it was closed. I changed plans and took a shower before lunch. After eating, we gathered for a group photo that captured the spirit of the weekend.
Archery and River Trail Adventures
After lunch, we headed to the archery range. Meg did an amazing job, hitting her targets with impressive precision. Dexter also had a great time giving it a try, and I enjoyed the focus and calm that came with the activity.
After archery and a chance to cool off, we met up at the cottage where the girls were staying.
From there, Riley, Wildcard, and I headed out for a kayaking trip on the river trail while the rest of the group went on a shark tooth hunt. The kayaking adventure was both fun and a bit challenging. We ended up going farther than planned and had to walk the kayaks through some shallow spots along the way.
During the trip, I unfortunately lost my phone. But honestly, being out on the water with like-minded people made the experience worth it. Once we returned, I asked Dexter to text my mom to let her know everything was okay.

Evening Campfire and Meaningful Connections
Dinner that night was a taco bar-style feast that everyone enjoyed. We once more celebrated Natalie's birthday, having cupcakes and singing Happy Birthday. Afterward, we gathered around a traditional First Descents campfire.
This was one of the most meaningful parts of the weekend. People shared stories, talked about their journeys, and opened up about their experiences. There were definitely a few tears, but also plenty of hugs and support. It created a strong sense of community and connection.
One of the most touching moments came during the Kalava ceremony with Dexter’s mom, Dianni. She chose me to receive the Kalava and shared how much she appreciated the friendship I had shown Dexter. I felt truly honored and grateful. I thanked her for bringing me along to this experience because it turned out to be far more meaningful than I could have expected.
One of the most fun parts of the weekend was playing the game Werewolf with all of my new First Descents friends. The game quickly brought everyone together as we tried to figure out who the werewolves were while defending ourselves from suspicion.
There was a lot of bluffing, joking, and dramatic accusations that had everyone laughing nonstop. Even though many of us had just met that weekend, the game made it feel like we had known each other much longer.
By the end of the night, we were laughing so hard it was hard to keep playing, and it became one of those simple moments that helped turn a group of strangers into real friends.

A Simple Sunday Morning That Meant a Lot
On Sunday morning, without my phone and knowing it would be out of the way for Dexter and his mom to bring me back, I decided to take a chance. At breakfast, I asked Meg if I could ride with her instead and have my dad pick me up at her house. She kindly said yes, and I had Dexter send her my dad’s information to make things easy.
What ended up happening was something I didn’t expect but really appreciated — the chance to spend some one-on-one time together. Considering I had only met her about two months before the trip and barely knew her at the time, it was great getting to talk, learn more about her, and connect on a deeper level. Now I feel like I know her much better, and I’m really glad I do.
Reflections on the Weekend
This weekend at CedarKirk was more than just a getaway. It was a chance to step outside comfort zones, build friendships, and embrace challenges with the support of others.
The mix of activities — from the ropes course to kayaking — offered both physical and emotional growth.
The campfire stories and the Kalava ceremony reminded us all of the power of connection, kindness, and community.
Weekends like this are a reminder that some of the best memories come from simple moments shared with people who truly understand and support each other.
